We just spent a few days camping on Whidbey Island, which is just a short ferry ride from Port Townsend on the new ferry Chetzmoka. Smooth, clean and shiny! The State Park just north of Coupeville was full due to it being Memorial weekend, but we found a site just south of town in Rhododendron county park. At only $10 a night, it was less than half of the state park fee and more conveniently located to Coupeville. Nicely wooded with the campsites more spaced apart than the SP and several trail loops for walking or biking. A bike path runs all the way to Coupeville and beyond and starts just a few hundred yards down the road from the park. Coupeville is charming with shops, galleries and restaurants located right on the water. Make sure you visit the Laugh Shop (that's what we call it), which has lots of things to make you giggle and guaranteed to have things you've never seen before.
