Due to budget deficits, the Washington legislature passed a bill requiring entry fees for all state parks beginning July 1st, 2011. You can either pay $10 per car per visit or get the annual Discover Pass for only $30. This will get you a paper pass with your license plate number on it that you can hang from your rear view mirror. IMPORTANT! If you are camping at a state park, your campsite fee covers the entry fee and you do NOT need to have an annual or daily pass. Annual passes are available at many sporting goods stores, but are cheaper if you buy them at a state park office. Many parks may not have any kind of entry booth, but will enforce the new law by ticketing cars without passes. The ticket is $90, less if you buy an annual pass within a set amount of time. While I would rather see all of our state parks free, this is a better solution than states like Arizona and California that are shutting down their state parks wholesale. Washington has many beautiful parks and the more you visit them, the cheaper that $30 Discover Pass will be.
