Starting in Port Angeles, you'll drive 17 miles on a winding road to reach Hurricane Ridge, the most easily accessed mountain region of Olympic National Park. It's uphill all the way, but well graded with a gradual climb and beautiful views along the way. Once at the top, at 5200', you can visit the Visitors Center or head off in several directions for a nice hike. The road is open all year, but you're required to carry tire chains during the winter months. Wild flowers blanket the sub-alpine meadows in the spring and skiing and snowshoeing are available in the winter. Expect cooler temperatures even during the summer.
