Even though the upper road to the Olympic Hot Springs is closed now for at least 2 years, the Elwha Campground is still worth staying in. located just a few miles west of Port Angeles, the Elwha Campground has two separate camping areas. We prefer the upper one as it is right on the beautiful Elwha River. There are several hiking trails in the area and the Park road makes for good biking. The upper lake is being drained for the upcoming dam removal, but you should still be able to drive the gravel road that runs along the eastern shore of the lake to several trailheads into the heart of the Olympics. The Elwha River valley was the starting point for the first non-native crossing of the Olympics on foot, which didn't take place until around 1890. The Press Party took over 4 months to complete the crossing, coming out in the Quinalt Valley.
